The first school in Mexia was built in 1884. It was located on Sumpter Street. The building had five large classrooms on the first floor, two large classrooms, two smaller rooms and an auditorium on the second floor. Each room was heated by a large coal stove. The first graduating class of Mexia was in 1888.
