The Mexia Public Schools Museum and Alumni Association board lost one of its most faithful members on September 2, 2010. Willie McBay Benton, who was born in Mexia, graduated from Dunbar High School in 1929. She received her Master's Degree from Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa. Sometime later she returned to Mexia to teach at Dunbar High School for 24 years. Having taught at several other places, she retired after 39 years in the classroom.
Mrs. Benton was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church in Mexia. In addition to serving on the Mexia Public Schools Museum board, she was also active in the Limestone Retired Teachers Association, the Dunbar-Douglass Alumni Association, the Ebonnette Club, and The Mexia Memorial Cemetery Board.
The memorabilia in the Dunbar-Douglass rooms at the Mexia Public Schools Museum has been collected and displayed mainly through the efforts of Mrs. Benton. She was a tireless and dependable worker at the museum who spent hours making sure that the history of the Dunbar-Douglass Schools was told and preserved. And even though she was nearly 98, she could always be counted on to be at the museum on Saturdays as long as her health permitted.
Anyone who visits the museum will see her handiwork everywhere. Mrs. Benton will be missed.
